Vamana Avatar And Emperor Mahabali

Once there was an Emperor named Mahabali, who was a grandson of Prahalatha and a son of Virochana. He was a great righteous ruler and an adherent devotee of Lord Maha Vishnu. He was earlier killed by Indran during the fight with him when both Asuras and Devas were churning the Milky Ocean to obtain the Nectar. Mahabali then brought back to life by his Guru Sukracharya with the help of his mantras and divine powers. Hence Mahabali had a brutal revenge on Indra Devan. He performed severe penance towards Lord Brahma Devar to obtain boons so that to defeat Indhran. Pleased by the sincere penance, Lord Brahma Devar gave him His dharshan and being the honest ruler meant for great things he was offered a boon that he cannot be defeated by Indran. Mahabai then defeated Indran and became King of all the worlds.

Once he was asked by his Guru Sukracharya to perform 100 Ashwamedha Yagams so that to be the ruler of all the 3 worlds for ever. He obeyed his guru and started to conduct Ashwamedha Yagas. Mean time Indran was dejected as Mahabali showed the entire universe that he is the better ruler than him. By seeing Indran so depressed his mother Adhiti asked him about the reason and came to know that it was only because of Mahabali. She then got a commitment from Indiran as he will act no more hasty and be good to every one and also added that she would solve his problems with the help of Lord Maha Vishnu. Later Adhiti underwent a meticulous penance to invoke Lord Maha Vishnu. Pleased Paranthaman appeared before her and asked her wishes. Adhiti requested Him that He should born as her child to destroy Mahabali and to give back Indhra Logam to Indhram. Almighty told her that even though Mahabali being His adherent devotee, being a human being he can not become the ruler of Indralogam, will be smashed and blessed by Him very soon.

Vamana Avatar - The First Avatar in which Almighty Incarnated asa Human Being.

After some time a Short, Black and Beautiful Son was born to Aditi and her consort Kashyaba Muni. He was named as “Vamana”. The 5th of the Dasavatar, where Lord Vishnu incarnated Himself as a dwarf to protect Indhran as well to bless His adherent devotee Emperor Mahabali. Vamana in Sanskrit means dwarf, A Small Person. He was extremely intelligent and was taught all Vedas and Puranas by his father Kashyaba Muni. Meanwhile Mahabali concluded 99 AShwamedha Yagams and to complete his 100th Yagam. At that time Vamana approached the Emperor and requested him to offer a Dhanaam. By noticing the charming boy, Mahabali got admired and asked him about his requirements. Vamana asked for just 3 steps of land to be measured by His own foot. But Sukracharya came to know through his powers that Vamana is none other than Lord Maha Vishnu and came to destroy Mahapali. He advised the king not to grand the wish of Vamana. But being the Emperor he cannot refuse that too even the wish was just 3 steps of land and also told Sukracharya that if Vaman would be Lord Maha Vishnu, it was the great privilege for him as he was offering something to the Almighty Himself.

Mahabali took a Kamandala to pour water to Vamana’s hands. To stop the process of Dhanam, Sukracharya took a form of bee and blocked the nozzle of Kamandala so that water will not be poured. By knowing his act, Vamana took Darbhai ( A Gras) and pricked the nozzle which pocked one eye of Sukracharya which made him to come out of the Kamndala. Sukracharya got struck and he was not in a position to stop the procedure of gifting. At Last the water followed from the kettle and the Samll Boy Vamana received his gift from Emperor. Sukracharyar tried his best to stop the emperor offering a gifts but all went in vain As soon as Vamana got the gift, HE transformed Himself into Thrivikrama, a Gigantic Posture touching the sky with His head. With His enormous foot measured the entire sky in His one step and the whole earth in His second step. Then He looked Mahabali where to measure His third step. Mahabali came to know that Vamana is none other than the Almighty. He became happy and realised all his mistakes. Overjoyed Emperor showed his head to meausre the 3rd step. Almighty obliged and put His foot on his head and sent Mahapali to Pathala Loga. As promised to Aditi, Almighty saved Indhiran and gave back his Kingdom. As the Almighty placed His foot on the head of Mahapali, he was sent to Pathala Logam. Hence he was not in a position to see the His Thrivikrama Posture and requested the Almighty to give darshan again as Ulagalantha Perumal. Ulagam means the entire universe and Alandha means measured. Pleased Paranthaman gave darshan to him in His Smaller Size in a Small Form of Adhiseshan next to Peragathan.
